They don't reconcile, do they? The statistics are clear - most children living in poverty are from families where there's just one wage earner and that wage is barely enough to cover the bills. This lady is the other end of the scale, getting more money than she needs each week.

She is an exceptional case though, and whilst I don't think much of the "I'm owed a living" attitude, I have to say that given the money she's getting, she is obviously doing a very good job of managing it. I think I'd probably rather have my taxes used like that than spent down the boozer or on dope and designer trainers!

Yes I would prefer to give her the money than it be spent as you say, on booze and drugs, however, her three children are of school age so I can't see why she hasn't been persuaded to take a part-time job whilst they are at school.

There must be thousands of other single mums in the same position, and I certainly support them getting housing and other help for their children but it must cost thousands.

Millions. Billions. Biggest cost is the bunch of civil servants who hand out the forms - but if we sack them all, we'll have to pay their dole on top!

As you say, with her kids in school, she should be trying to support herself, but she obviously doesn't want to. My question would be what she's going to do when she no longer gets child benefit and support? Maybe she'll just have more kids.... :(

I have read that young lads are whingeing about the benefits single mums receive yet often they are giving them the babies and then buzzing off, so the State becomes the 'father' in these families.
